WELCOME TO SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES.
“In Special Circumstances we deal in the moral equivalent of black holes, where the normal laws—the rules of right and wrong that people imagine apply everywhere else in the universe—break down; beyond those metaphysical event-horizons, there exist … special circumstances. That’s us. That’s our territory; our domain.” Diziet Sma – Use of Weapons.
INTRODUCTION:
We are a low-demand, roleplaying organisation for Cloud Imperium Games' Star Citizen, based (quite shamelessly) on Iain M. Banks' Culture novels.
As a newbie, this is the only board you should be able to see in this forum.
THERE ARE A LOT MORE: The majority are reserved for the use of full members of Special Circumstances. We use the forum's group memberships (see your profile) to organise things, including rankings within the organisation.
We have a few rules (above and beyond the standard decency rules you'll find everywhere):
No (unauthorised) Piracy and no pod killing, slavery or deliberate griefing. We want to contribute to making Star Citizen a fun experience that’s challenging for the right reasons. Any members found to be engaging in these activities will be expelled.
Show Respect. Every member of Special Circumstances are expected to show respect for other members and allies of the organisation, a certain level of maturity is required and no back stabbing or underhanded tactics will be tolerated. Disrespect of others' gender, race, religion, sexual preference is also prohibited. None of those things should matter, we're playing a damn video game.
Ship Naming. As the organisation is founded on an appreciation of the Culture novels by Iain M Banks (R.I.P.), ship names must follow Culture styles. Direct copying is not accepted however, this is intended as a tribute to the books, not pure plagiarism.
Multiple Organisation Rules. Members belonging to multiple organisations are allowed in Special Circumstances as long as the other organisation’s rules & conduct are aligned with our own. Therefore if an applicant also belongs to a pirate organisation for example, the application will be declined. If it is found that already existing members of Special Circumstances also belong to a conflicting organisation that member will be asked to choose whether to leave that org and stay with us or leave Special Circumstances.
Secret Organisations. The aim of Special Circumstances is to create a close knit group of players who feel they can rely and depend on each other. As such any affiliations must be revealed to the Senior Operative granting membership, failure to do so will lead to expulsion from our group.
With that out of the way let's get into things:
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:
Special Circumstances is a clandestine, self-sufficient splinter group from the United Earth Empire Navy, without oversight or direction. It exists purely to "act for the good of mankind". Individual interpretations on how to achieve this are common, and it is not unusual for there to be disagreements within the organisation. To prevent deadlock the organisation is led by a Council of Seven members. While originally part of the UEEN, Special Circumstances now operates on its own remit - membership of the UEEN is not mandatory for membership in Special Circumstances. If any organisation (including UEEN units) is found to be operating contrary to the benefit of mankind, it is possible that Special Circumstance may authorise action against them.
We broadly split our activities (Operations) into three categories: Exploration, Trade and Combat. Members of the organisation can choose to register an interest in any, all, or none of these.
Our lowest rank is that of Recruit Candidate. Recruit Candidates are not full members of the organisation, but have expressed an interest in joining. You can become a Recruit Candidate by joining the Recruit Candidates group in your profile on this forum. Once you have joined this group, post in the Candidates Area and a Senior Operative will get in touch with you to discuss becoming a full Operative. It is likely that the Senior Operative will want to get to know you a bit before granting you full membership.
The vast bulk of our members will be Operatives. Operatives are full members of the organisation and can view and post in the majority of the forums here. Operative is a petitioned rank that can only be granted by members of Senior Operative rank or higher. Operatives can suggest Operations in the forums for any of the three specialisms, which may then be arranged and planned by a Senior Operative. Operatives are NOT obliged to participate in any Operation; participation is voluntary. With this said, we do expect of all our members that committing to (saying you'll participate in) an activity should be viewed as binding, without a very good, unexpected IRL reason!
Senior Operatives are in charge of recruiting and organising Operations. You could view them as 'officers', but perhaps 'ringleader' is a better term. Senior Operative status can only be granted directly by a member of the Council of Seven. Senior Operatives have access to further forum boards to arrange Operations and conduct post-mortems on completed ones. Senior Operations also have access to the Council Petitions board to request a Council Mandated Operation. Senior Operatives ARE obliged to participate, if able and requested to, in a Council Mandated Operation. Availability for callup can be stated in a specific thread in the Operative Area.
The Council of Seven are the top tier of Special Circumstances' structure and include the three founders of the organisation. In general the organisation should pretty much run itself, unless something unusual is going on, or one of the Senior Operatives wants to do something big. The primary responsibility of the Council is to ensure that our members are having a good time and that the hierarchy of the organisation is filled out correctly. Councillors have the rights to grant or revoke any rank.
ABOUT THESE FORUMS:
The majority of these forums are 'Roleplaying' Boards. As such many of our members may be choosing to post as if they were their characters 'In Character'. When posting as your real-life self, please use a tag of [OOC] in the front of your thread title. In [OOC] threads you can post freely as you wish. In threads that are NOT marked [OOC], please make an effort to try and keep 'In Character' so as not to spoil it for others.
Beyond this, as mentioned the boards are heavily segregated by member rank. A lot of options open to you when you are granted Operative status. Don't go mad. Post relevant information only where it's relevant. There will be further 'sticky' posts around the place to explain any special rules for particular forums.
READY TO JOIN?
If you're ready to step into the shadows and join us in Special Circumstances, join the Recruit Candidates group in your profile (petition for other membership if you like, it won't be granted until we know you) and put a post in this Board.
